Love this! Gonna take me a moment to process, tho'. And you're welcome. And does any of this have to do with "The Decameron" too. I'm like clearing cobwebs and foggily remembering something from that bad-ass humanities class I took in Boulder

I really love that U2 song. It makes me think of Everyman--at the end, there's just him and his good deeds--cuz he's packin' a suitcase to a place none of us has been. :)

In your other post, but I'll mention it here, you talk about the issue of grayness: I'm finding it interesting that in recent episodes, many aspects of people's lives seem much better in the no-island-version of life.

You're right--Jacob is one of those ambiguous OT characters--the point about them seems to be that after the Fall, God had this really terrible material to work with. So you see it over and over again--we're just dumb as posts and deaf to voice of the divine, but Jacob's at least willing to wrestle with the angel whereas Esau's all about his belly. Plus he's very hairy and apelike. And I agree about the Jacob's ladder point--Jacob doesn't CLIMB the ladder--he sees angels going up and down the ladder. And then he wrestles with the angel, and is permanently marked by it. I would think the ladders going down are more divine-comedy-esque. Not that I actually remember any ladders in Dante's text. But that whole midway-through-my-life's journey-I-got-confused and-LOST seems appropriate here.

Thanks for the camera-wave.

It's Sartre--"Hell is other people."

And only at an academic conference would someone argue that the Ally McBeal bathroom is a "liminal zone." Which is silly, of course, and nothing like arguing that "The Hangover" is Just Like "A Midsummer Nights Dream," which is smart.

I thought for sure you'd mention something about the S at the pub in Trafalgar Square and tie that back to Ulysses. Or the meandering around Covent Garden off the Piccadilly Line, seeking some elusive sushi bar. Maybe the near 'thraxing at one of 5 Maroush's near Paddington Station.
